'Excellence and
Simplicity' is not only the logo of Narendra Chandel's software tool 'BatchFTP'
(www.BatchFTP.com) but also his motto in life. A software engineer by
profession Narendra has developed a free FTP client, which has a wide array of
features. This tool makes unattended file transfer absolutely effortless. This
is specially designed for an easy and uncomplicated automatic transfer of
hundreds of files, folders even just a couple of files.
However, there
are many tools available in the market for this purposes but they certainly
come with a price. "I wanted a tool with specific features and low cost.
Additionally, which could not only monitor my site, but help me with the
uploading and downloading of files on Internet" elucidates Narendra.
It took many
sleepless nights for him to give his idea a shape. He studied and researched
other FTP clients, observed the features that were missing and finally with his
own ingenuity and creativity came forward with this tool.
Some of the innovative and unique features of his tool are "File
Filters" - Once a list of flies and folders is created to upload or
download, one can specify filters by using wild card characters to apply on the
file transfer. The "Transfer in Batch" is yet another distinctive
feature of his tool. Once the batch has been created and file transfer started,
the BatchFTP can be left unattended, it follows settings given by the users and
works accordingly.
His adventure
with cutting edge technology has given him accolades not only with the users
but also companies such as CNET and ZDNET have given him due recognition. With,
CNET's strict standards and benchmark for publishing individual tools, it
wasn't a cakewalk for Narendra. "I was rejected thrice but I did not loose
hope until I finally got my tool published on their site." Though he had
just submitted to CNET USA today it is available at ZDNET and CNET ASIA.
His tool is
especially beneficial for people who maintain their own web sites. In addition
to the small online stores and webmasters of companies who use it on regular
basis to maintain company websites. Concisely, any one who moves around files
on Internet can use this tool.
As per the CNET
count till now more than 14 thousand people have downloaded the tool from their
site only. However, the tool is available free at many other websites such as
www.sharewarejunction.com, www.softwarevault.com, www.shareconnection.com and
many more.
The popularity of
the tool can be gauged by the fact that schools such Community Unit School
District in Illinois have also started using this tool. Students are using this
tool to automatically upload their roster. Few authors have contacted Narendra
for including his source code in their free CD's along with their books. These
are just a few feathers on his cap.
Narendra has also
penned down few of his ideas and innovations on various open source sites. One
of the popular one is "Implementing pause and resume at FTP
clients"(http://www.codeproject.com/useritems/pauseresume.asp). As they
always say behind every successful man there is a woman and so has Aparna, his
wife been. "We did have our own share of disparities but I have always
admired his zest and zeal for his projects, adds her." The couple is
blessed with a six-month-old baby boy Vatsal.
The computer geek
who has miles to go still, says, "The entire project has been a learning
experience for me but it is only the overwhelming response from the users that
keeps me motivated"
